The Smilodon is a genus of Felidae that lived in North America more than 2.5 million years ago. The name of this animal comes from the Greek "smile", "sharp tool", and "odous, odontos", "tooth". Similar to the lion, it was characterized by its long upper canines (18 to 20 cm) emerging in front of the lower jaw, no doubt used to "stab" its victims. It weighed 200 to 300 kg, measured about 2 to 3 meters. Several hypotheses are put forward on his disappearance. The first is that of climate change which has led to the disappearance or adaptation of big game with, for example, the appearance of the plains bison. The second, much less likely, is that of hunting by humans.
